The US collapses: a scenario

Now, however, a real-life Hari Seldon has developed his form of psychohistory. In September, ecologist Peter Turchin, of the University of Connecticut, publishes War and Peace and War, a book in which he explains much of pre-industrial world history with his bold and controversial theory of the rise and fall of empires, using the same kind of mathematics that Turchin has used to study ecosystems.

The Other Hitchens by Stephen Marshall

For most American liberals, the name Hitchens is enough to draw blood – to the face. But for Sunday newsreaders in Britain, it is another Hitchens who has been riling audiences with his blistering polemics: Christopher’s younger brother, Peter. Winner of the Columnist of the Year at the 2005 British Press Awards, Peter Hitchens is an authentic conservative, rooted in the classic liberal values of the Enlightenment era.

"Beyond Chutzpah" Too Hot for Harvard by John Farley

CounterPunchers are already aware of the attempts by Alan Dershowitz to stop publication of Norman Finkelstein's book Beyond Chutzpah with threats of a libel suit. When Dershowitz failed, that seemed to be the end of the story, but it wasn't: The effort to suppress the book continues in new ways. Bookstores normally host events to introduce new books, but at least two bookstores have now rescinded invitations to previously scheduled events for Beyond Chutzpah.

The Thirteenth Tribe - Arthur Koestler

This book traces the history of the ancient Khazar Empire, a major but almost forgotten power in Eastern Europe, which in A.D. 740 converted to Judaism. Khazaria, a conglomerate of Aryan Turkish tribes, was finally wiped out by the forces of Genghis Han, but evidence indicates that the Khazars themselves migrated to Poland and formed the craddle of Western (Ashkenazim) Jewry...

Our Jesse by R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

There are two topics on which Helms is particularly worth reading, race relations and the United Nations. On race relations he manfully comes out and makes the case for states' rights and the integration that he seems to think could have been worked out in the last quarter of the 20th century without heavy-handed federal involvement.

At the very end of his memoir he reprints his very compelling speech to the United Nations as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. There he notified the assembled crooks and agents of tyranny that American sovereignty cannot be usurped. It is dependent of the "consent of the American people." He reminds them of the dreadful job they have done as peacekeepers and conflict managers. And he urges an end to corruption.

Former CIA worker analyses bin Laden threat

MICHAEL SCHEUER: Yeah, if bin Laden was a Christian, it was the Christmas present he always wanted but never expected from his parents. It basically validated all of the things he had said about America over the past decade. The Americans, he said, want our oil. The Americans will destroy any Arab government that is a threat to Israel. The Americans want to destroy Islam and occupy our sanctities and of course Iraq is the second holiest place in Islam. And besides validating what he had said, the invasion of Iraq in the Islamic world is viewed as an invasion by the infidels of Islamic territory.
