Grand National Party (GNP) lawmakers Joo Sung-young and Park Seung-hwan have stoked further antagonism between the ruling and opposition parties by alleging that Uri Party lawmaker Lee Chul-woo joined North Korea's Korean Workers Party (KWP) in 1992 and was still secretly active in its ranks.
During a plenary session on the last day of the regular National Assembly Thursday, the two GNP lawmakers' issued the accusation that led to a volley of recriminations.
"Lee joined the KWP in 1992, receiving the party codename 'Daedunsan 820,' and is still secretly active within its ranks," said Rep. Joo on Wednesday.
"Among the 161 lawmakers that have agreed to the bill abolishing the National Security Law, are there a few more that are members of the KWP?" he asked, adopting a strategy of rhetoric to undermine the ruling party's strong push for the controversial proposal...
